Is Your E-Bike Legal in California?

New laws effective January 1, 2026 changed the rules. Here's what you need to know — and how we can help.

    What Changed?

California passed two major e-bike laws that went into effect on January 1, 2026:

    SB 1271 — Battery & Device Safety

E-bikes and lithium-ion batteries sold after January 1, 2026 must be tested and certified by accredited laboratories to meet safety standards. This targets dangerous batteries and low-quality imports that have caused fires.

AB 1774 — Speed Modification Crackdown

It is now illegal to sell, install, or use devices designed to push e-bikes beyond their legal speed or power limits. If your e-bike has been de-restricted or modified for more speed, it may not be street-legal.

    Updated Safety Equipment Requirements

All e-bikes must now have a rear red light or reflector visible during both day AND night — not just after dark. This is a change many riders don't know about.

    Our E-Bike Compliance Check

    Quick. Affordable. Peace of mind.

For $49, our certified technicians will inspect your e-bike and verify compliance with current California law:

    • Classification verification — Is your e-bike properly classified as Class 1, 2, or 3?
    • Speed and power audit — Does it stay within legal limits? Any unauthorized modifications?
    • Battery certification review — Does your battery meet safety certification standards?
    • Safety equipment check — Rear light/reflector, required reflectors, brake function
    • General safety inspection — Brakes, tires, frame, and overall rideworthiness
    • Written compliance report — Take home a document showing your bike's status

Time: 15-30 minutes | Walk-ins welcome | No appointment needed

    Who Needs This?

    • Anyone riding an e-bike in California — especially if you bought it before 2026
    • Riders who bought from brands with unclear certification — many budget e-bikes may not have certified batteries
    • Anyone with aftermarket modifications — speed hacks, power mods, controller swaps
    • Parents of teen e-bike riders — the new laws crack down on youth e-bike safety
    • Anyone who got their e-bike as a gift or secondhand — you may not know its compliance status
